What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are protective coatings made of a special resin that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars) to protect them from cavities. These sealants act as a barrier between the tooth and cavity-causing bacteria in food particles and plaque. Applying dental sealants is fast, painless, and easy, taking only minutes per tooth! Once applied, these protective coatings can last up to 10 years with proper maintenance.

How Do Sealants Work?

The chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars have tiny grooves which act like traps for plaque and food debris, making them very vulnerable to decay when not properly cleaned or maintained. Applying a thin coating of tooth-colored resin (dental sealant) over these grooves fills them so that plaque and food particles can no longer get stuck. As such, this helps prevent cavities from forming on those surfaces where the dental sealant has been applied since bacteria cannot penetrate through it.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Just about any child or adolescent can benefit from dental sealants since they provide an effective way to help protect their teeth from cavities, especially those who have difficulty brushing properly or who tend to eat lots of sugary foods or drinks. Children as young as four or five should consider getting this preventive procedure done since cavities can start forming early due to improper brushing habits or consumption of sugary foods/drinks. Even teenagers can benefit from dental sealants since they usually don’t brush their molars as well as they should, making them more prone to decay if not adequately protected with this simple yet effective procedure.

What Types Of Sealants Are Available?

At Oso Pediatric Dentistry, we utilize two types of dental sealant materials depending on your needs: composite resin (tooth-colored) or glass ionomer cement (clear). Both types provide adequate protection against cavities, but composite resin tends to last longer than glass ionomer cement which is why it’s more commonly used for those at higher risk for tooth decay, such as younger children who may not remember how important proper oral hygiene habits are just yet!

What are the Benefits Of Getting Sealants?

The benefits of getting dental sealants to go beyond just cavity prevention. They also help strengthen enamel and make brushing easier, as less force is required when brushing over sealed surfaces versus unsealed ones! Additionally, they reduce the need for fillings by up to 80%, which helps save money in the long run because you won’t have to pay for expensive treatments down the line if you take proper care now with preventive procedures like sealing teeth! Finally, applying sealant material is entirely painless, so there’s nothing scary about it either – perfect for helping kids feel comfortable when visiting the dentist’s office!
