What is Fluoride?

Dr. Elena Bedilo, our pediatric dentist, specializes in the delivery of fluoride treatments to children. Fluoride is a mineral that helps protect teeth from the decay-causing acids in plaque. Fluoride treatments are a safe and effective way to help prevent tooth decay, especially in children.

What is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

At Oso Pediatric Dentistry, we offer a variety of fluoride treatments, including Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF is a safe, quick, and effective treatment option that can help prevent and stop tooth decay. SDF is applied as a liquid to the affected area and hardens to form a protective barrier on the tooth. This barrier blocks the acids in plaque from attacking the tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities from forming. SDF is ideal for children who may have difficulty sitting for traditional dental procedures and can be used to treat cavities in baby teeth.

What are the Benefits of Fluoride?

Unlike other fluoride treatments, such as gels and varnishes, SDF is applied directly to the tooth surface. Placing it directly on the tooth makes it easy to use and much less time-consuming than other fluoride treatments.

SDF is also an excellent choice for children; we can apply it quickly without isolation. This means it can be done in a single visit, making it much more convenient for the patient and the dentist. Additionally, SDF is effective in treating cavities, even in cases where other treatments have failed. Treating cavities makes it an excellent option for patients with difficulty adhering to traditional fluoride treatments. Finally, SDF is also cost-effective, as it requires fewer visits.

What is the Process of Getting Fluoride Treatment?

Before beginning the treatment, Dr. Bedilo will perform a comprehensive oral exam to diagnose any existing cavities and determine the best course of treatment. She may also take X-rays to understand the extent of the decay better.

The Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment process is simple and painless. First, the affected area is cleaned and dried. Then, a thin layer of the silver diamine fluoride solution is applied to the cavity, which helps to harden the area and prevent further decay. We complete the treatment by sealing the area with a dental resin to protect the hole from further damage. The process usually takes less than 30 minutes and is a safe and effective way to treat cavities in children.
